Fukuoka Eats

Fish gotta swim, tourists gotta eat, and what’s a trip to Fukuoka without indulging in some of the amazing local food? Fresh, cheap, trendy and delicious dining options are everywhere in the city. This little list of places to eat in Fukuoka comes as an add-on to my personal guide to Kyushu. It doesn’t include any ramen shops or other Fukuoka-specific cuisine; instead it’s the places that I frequent when meeting up with friends or eating out with my husband.

Tenjin

opening hours: 11:00-23:00 (Weekdays), 10:30-23:00 (Weekends) / tel.
web: http://www.akindo-sushiro.co.jp/shop/detail.php?id=280&pref=40
Cheap, fun kaiten-sushi at its very best! This chain of revolving sushi restaurants features touch-screen menus that sit above your booth, making ordering a huge part of the fun. When your order is coming around, you'll hear a little melody and know that sweet sushi nourishment is on its way! If you prefer to play fast and loose, you can watch the plates go by and pick whatever takes your fancy. At ¥100 per plate, you can't go wrong.

Kawara & Forward
opening hours:10:00-23:00 / tel.
web: http://fukuoka.parco.jp/page2/9621/
Lots of great dishes, but I love their signature dish of "kawara soba": green soba noodles served on a roof tile (kawara). Even though this restaurant is inside PARCO department store, you'll forget all about its surroundings when you enter; It's spacious and fashionable with comfortable sofas, low lighting and DJ decks for night live shows.

Rojiura Shokudo
opening hours:11:00-23:00 / tel.
web: http://fukuoka.parco.jp/page2/7790/
The main branch of Rojiura Shokudo is in Futsukaichi, but if you're not able to make the trek you can settle for their department-store outlet in the basement of PARCO 1. Great, nutritious and light teishoku set meals.

opening hours: 10:00-23:00 / tel.
web: http://www.soup-stock-tokyo.com/store/40/1075/
As a soup-lover, this Tokyo-based chain was a godsend when it opened in Tenjin. The soups on offer change seasonally so there's always something new to try (although I'm quite partial to the Tokyo Borsch!) Bonus points for its convenient location at the bottom of PARCO, a stone's throw away from the subway exit.

510 (enter Shintencho shopping arcade from the Nishitetsu Grand Hotel side, the restaurant is to the left)
opening hours: 11:00-20:00 / tel.
web: http://www.shintencho.or.jp/tobiume/
Without a doubt, the best oyakodon I’ve tasted. It's refined and carefully prepared, whereas other oyakodons tend to be quick, standard meals. Your complimentary cup of fresh green tea is topped up constantly, and the atmosphere here is all class.

opening hours:10:00-20:00 / tel.
web: http://yuicha.jp/shop/imz/
Do you love matcha? Of course you do! Don't miss this little green-tea specialty cafe inside IMS building. The shop uses high-quality Yame (Fukuoka) matcha and Kyoto sencha, from the family’s Tagashira Tea company. Get your matcha fix in many forms of desserts and drinks (their iced-matcha, straight, with no milk or syrup is HEAVEN) or drop by at lunch time for ochazuke (a dish in which you pour green tea over your rice).

opening hours:10:00-20:30 / tel.
web: http://www.nanasgreentea.com/en/
All the same draw-cards as Tagashira Chaho for matcha-lovers, but with the added benefit of a great aerial view of Kego Park. Matcha/green tea dominates the extensive menu of this national chain (founded in Kyoto) but the meals here are yummy too, and all go really well with a cup of sencha. A great spot to hang out with a friend, and a window seat is a must.

opening hours:10:00-22:00 / tel.
web: http://www.deandeluca.co.jp/storelocations/market/fukuoka/index_new.shtml
Rejoice! Fukuoka now has two locations of this New York chain of "upscale grocery stores". Here you'll find fresh foods and deli items, cooking ingredients, baked goods and ready-made meals that are sure to cure even the most painful case of homesickness. I love their ricotta and raspberry muffins, their sandwiches (sweet and sour pork & salad foccacia, yes!), internationally themed salads... the list goes on.

opening hours:10:00-21:00 / tel.
web: http://www.muji.com/jp/shop/045200
If you're into Japanese design aesthetics, you're sure to be acquainted with minimalist lifestyle superstore MUJI. Cafe&Meal MUJI takes all the factors that make MUJI products great (high quality, good design, affordability) and translates them perfectly into cuisine. Here you can choose your favourite 3-4 items from a deli display case of wholesome hot dishes and fresh salads, accompanied with your choice of bread or rice and soup. The food is tasty, fresh and interesting, and you can eat in a cafe area furnished in everything MUJI.

Daimyo

opening hours: 11:00-22:00 (Lunch: 11:00-14:00) / tel.
web: http://chikae.co.jp/language/en/
If you go to just one place on this list, go to Chikae. If you live in Fukuoka and have guests visiting from abroad, take them to Chikae! Seriously, go now! What are you waiting for? Inside a large Japanese building in Daimyo, Chikae has been serving up exceptional seafood in a traditional setting since 1961. Tanks of live fish, sushi-chefs working busily within eyesight, beautiful ladies waiting on guests in full kimono, and the best value-for-money Japanese lunch set you’ll find anywhere. Eating here is like entering a scene from a Ghibli film. From 11:00-14:00, locals line up to claim one of the day’s limited 500 lunch sets. Choose from “Wa- Teishoku 和定食” with fresh sashimi and tempura or  “Soba-Teishoku蕎麦定食” with tempura and soba noodles. Both meals are only ¥1,400 and come with multiple magnificent small plates of various pickles, side-dishes, tofu, and green tea. The dinner time menu is much pricier, so make sure to arrive in time for lunch!

Corduroy Cafe〒810-0041
opening hours:11:00-03:00 / tel.
web: http://corduroy-cafe.com/
There are a few locations of this trendy cafe dotted around Fukuoka city (at PARCO, Kitte Hakata) but for the full experience you have to take the elevator up to the original 4th floor location in Daimyo. The food here is so fresh, stylish and delicious. The higawari daily plate is always a good choice, with mixed grain rice and excellent miso on the side. Get a seat at the window for a bird's eye view of Daimyo. After your meal, pop down the street to browse vinyls at Borderline Records or start a walking circuit of the many vintage shops in the area.

Gamlangdii
opening hours: 11:30-15:00, 17:30-24:00 / tel.
web: http://gamlangdii.jp/index.html
Whenever we need a spicy fix in Fukuoka, we find our way to this underground Thai joint. The papaya salad burns your mouth in a good way, the pad thai and curries are sure to satisfy, and you'd be silly not to finish off your meal with a heavenly mango sticky-rice. Cheerful staff and a colourful marketplace atmosphere make it a great spot for a night out with friends in Daimyo.

Cat & Fish
opening hours:10:00 - 23:00 (closed Mon.) / tel.
web: http://catandfish.jp
Central-Daimyo location, cute and cosy atmosphere and a menu featuring great omurice, pizzas and more make Cat & Fish a great date spot in the city. The shop exterior is rather unique and instagramable, and right above the cafe is Fukuoka's coolest hair salon - Vendllman.

Red Fox
opening hours: 17:00-1:00 (Mon.-Thu.), 17:00-4:00 (Fri., Sat., Hol.) 17:00-24:00 (Sun.) / tel.
web: http://www.morris-pub.com/redfox.html
Fish and chips, Magners cider on tap (so rare in Fukuoka!) and a rooftop deck with a view over Tenjin? Yes please! Red Fox is one of my favourite spots for balmy summer evenings with friends. If you're after the "British Pub" atmosphere or live sports on TV, you can always get a seat inside near the bar, but I come here almost exclusively for the breezy rooftop ambience.

Keurig Neko Cafe
opening hours: 13:00-22:00 (Weekdays except Tue.), 11:30-22:00 (Weekends) / tel.
web: http://nekocafe-keurig.com/
Looking for your Japanese cat cafe experience? Keurig in Daimyo is a really fun spot to spend an hour or two with cafe food, drinks and a bunch of kitties to play with. Bonus points because all the cats are rescued strays.

Akasaka

Bar Rosa Rosa〒810-0023
opening hours:9:00-00:00 / tel.
web: https://www.facebook.com/BARROSAROSA/?fref=ts
One of my favourites for any occasion! Feminine おしゃれな shop fitout, great lunch and dinner tapas sets, sweet tarts and pies, and yummy homemade sangria.  The street-facing side of Rosa Rosa is a florist, and its flower shop atmosphere spills over into the restaurant.

opening hours: 10:00-20:00 (Saturday: until 18:00)lunch from 11:30-14:00 / tel.
web: http://lilyvalley.jp/
Sweet vegan treats, meals, juices and teas. Cute and cosy atmosphere.

opening hours:11:30-18:00 (Tue~Sun) / tel.
web: http://www.cafe-tonerico.com / facebook
Finding this hidden cafe feels like a reward in itself! The atmosphere is warm and fashionable, all of the friendly staff wear berets and matching striped shirts, there’s a gorgeous garden courtyard seating area. Not to mention the food, which is fresh, beautiful and healthy.

Chuo-ku (Otemon, Ohori, Ropponmatsu)

opening hours: 8:00-19:00 (closed Mon.) / tel.
web: http://www.raggruppi.net
A cute little two-storey bakery/restaurant with a buzzing atmosphere and great lasagna! The lunch set comes with all-you-can-eat bread if that's your jam.

opening hours: 11:00-21:00 (Weekdays), 9:00-21:00 (Weekends) / tel.
web: http://www.oohoriboathouse.jp/
Reopened in 2015, the Ohori Boathouse is home to a Pinkberry frozen yoghurt shop, a fancy French restaurant called Hananoki, and a spacious & warm cafe “Royal Garden Cafe”. If you’re looking for a place to dine overlooking Ohori Park’s lake, make a reservation at the cafe. The menu is Western style (salad, pasta, pizza, steak, pancakes), and there’s a wonderful deck area for open-air dining. Recommended spot for celebratory dinners!

La Spiga
opening hours: 7:30-20:00 (closed Tue.) / tel.
web: http://laspiga.seesaa.net
A good loaf of bread is hard to find in Japan, so a trip to bakery La Spiga is worthwhile. The bread here has crunchy crusts and great density (i.e. not the regular airy white bread that reigns supreme in Japan). We often drop by for take-away sandwiches to eat at nearby Ohori Park.

Day's Cup Coffee中央区六本松1-3-13 Fukuoka-shi, Fukuoka
opening hours:11:30-19:00 (closed Thur.) / tel.
web: https://www.facebook.com/dayscupcafe/
A sweet and trendy little coffee spot tucked away on a back-street behind the NHK television station, a short walk from Ohori Park. The menu features homemade sandwiches and focaccias, fresh baked goods, fruit ice cream made on-premises, drinks, and a focus on good coffee.

Yakuin

opening hours: 19:00-3:00AM (Closed Wed.) / tel.
web: http://kingkong777.com/
Full disclosure, I haven’t been to King Kong Diner on a regular business day but I’m there regularly for a monthly swing dancing event and I can vouch for its classic vintage-themed decor, friendly owner/barman and fresh burgers! I can’t think of a better place to forget about the modern world, cosy up into a booth and soak in the air of US 50s/60s nostalgia that fills the diner

Saturday.
opening hours: 8:00 - 22:00 (Closed Tuesday) / tel.
web: http://sat.andready.net
Trendy, open space cafe with a menu of delicious meals. If you’re chasing hipster vibes, this place has it down to an art form (think mason jar glassware and a personalised “Saturday. And Ready” branding iron for the burger buns).

Hakata

opening hours:11:00-23:0
tel.
web: http://www.isoragi.co.jp
Kaisendon as beautiful as it is delectable. The sashimi here is so fresh and delicate, arranged with care over a bowl of rice and with deep, delicious soy sauce and side dishes to enhance the flavour. Great view from the top of Hakata Eki - try to grab a window seat!

opening hours:10:00-23:00
tel.
web: http://www.brooklynparlor.co.jp/hakata/
When you're in the mood for burgers and NYC vibes, catch the subway to Nakasu-Kawabata and settle in at popular hang-out Brooklyn Parlor. Exposed bricks, a full-wall mural, and a library that you can browse while you wait for your burgers fill out the atmosphere here. The food is great - build your own burger or opt for one of their tried-and-tested burger combos, plus lots of other US style menu items. There's Brooklyn Lager, cider and my choice - the homemade lemonade.

Nishijin

Bio Warun
opening hours: 11:00-23:00 (Sun.-Thurs.), 11:00-23:30 (Fri., Sat.) / tel.
Pretty and feminine, this shop at the Takatori end of Nishijin Shotengai is a lovely place to chat for hours with friends over good food. The decor is charming: a spacious white room with antique furniture, plenty of plant-life, and dried flowers and other relics adorning the walls. Sink back into a sofa and order from a menu featuring dishes that are ideal to share: cheese & organic dried fruit platters, salads and mains using local produce in imaginative recipes, and a selection of cheesecakes, tarts, parfaits and other sweets that go well with a cup of tea.

I'll add to this list when I have some time! I'm also working on a list of my favourite shops in Fukuoka to post soon. Thanks for reading,
