Filtered Perth: January and February Moments

I sometimes wonder if this blog is still relevant now that I'm no longer living in Japan.  I am aware that my posts have become less interesting (or at least less regular) since I said sayonara to the enchanting Land of the Rising Sun and returned Down Under.

But it's not like since I returned to Australia I've stopped taking photos or going on adventures (where possible)... and it has become a deeply ingrained habit of mine to bookend each adventure with a blog post. So I don't think I'll stop just yet.  Would you like to hear about January and February in Perth?

All is magic: Albany

久しぶるですね!Sorry for the silence lately, we have been super busy moving into our new place. I'll share photos of our place soon, but for today I have a set of photos from an overnight work trip to Albany earlier this year. Albany was stunning. I'm already planning my return...

Pip & Pop "When Happiness Ruled" at PICA

After years of loving Pip & Pop's work, I finally was able to see her exhibition "When Happiness Ruled" at PICA today. It was sugary, glittery dreaminess 💖✨ Lately I've been feeling more settled in our new (old) home in Australia. Being able to go to events like this makes me happy to be in Perth, and I'm looking forward to the summer months ahead.

Wedding Magic - Rottnest, Western Australia

Today I'll share some snaps from last weekend, when we attended Katina & Lee's dreamy beach wedding at Rottnest Island. Biggest congrats to the beautiful bride (my long-time friend) and her beloved - their day was sunny and bright and full of pure happiness.

Rottnest itself is so strikingly lovely. Two days on its sandy shores and in its turquoise waters was nowhere near long enough!

Antiques and a Train : Sunday in Guildford

A nostalgic visit to our wedding venue, a morning rummaging in antique shops, followed by lunch in a restored train carriage. Guildford treated us to a delightful Sunday morning, topping off a great weekend.

Bush Walking in Mundaring

Our two-person hiking team has relocated to the Aussie bush. We picked up the hobby of hiking in Japan, and our first chance to get out in Australia came last Sunday when we took a wander down the Bibbulmun Track in Mundaring.

To York! The first weekend drive.

After struggling through the week with an annoying cold, this weekend couldn't have come any sooner. We had tentatively planned to hit the road this weekend for our first country drive in the new car, and thankfully I woke up this morning feeling well enough to go. The destination? York - a historic country town about an hour and a half from Perth. The drive there was spectacular - all green grassy plains, grazing cows and sheep, carpets of wildflowers and big ghostly trees. We stopped to admire the endless canola fields on the way there and back, ate meat pies and sausage rolls, stopped in country op-shops, and spent the afternoon walking around admiring York's extremely historic buildings (dating back to the 1850s!)

Old home, new home : Wildflowers in Perth

Perth, we're back! We've been back in Australia for two weeks now, and it's both strange and strangely normal. Leaving Japan was incredibly sad and difficult, but it has really helped that both Kam and I got stuck into work straight away, without even a moment to slow down and consider the magnitude of things. The weather has been splendid, the sky endless and blue, and we've had happy reunions with family, friends and dogs.

Lanterns and Last Meetings: Gokoku Jinja Mitama Matsuri

Gokoku Mitama Matsuri is certainly one of the best summer festivals in Fukuoka. This year they combined the lantern festival with the shrine's regular flea market: two of my favourite events in one place. My friend Mina helped me to get dressed in my lilac yukata, she wore a lovely vintage yukata that her Mum wore in her youth, and we took a bus to Gokoku Shrine to enjoy a perfect summer festival - eating kakigori, browsing flea market stalls, bumping into friends and enjoying the wondrous atmosphere that 6,000 hand-painted lanterns creates.

Filtered Fukuoka: July and August Moments

It'll come as no surprise that we are very busy right now as we prepare to leave Fukuoka in less than two weeks. Right now we're in intense packing mode, pulling apart our little Nishijin apartment and deciding what to bring home, meeting buyers to hand over our beloved furniture and household items (without being too nostalgic about the things we're selling), and meeting as many friends as we can, while we can.
